Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, is a federal holiday in the United States celebrated on June 19. It commemorates the date in 1865 when Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and issued General Order No. 3, which informed the last enslaved African Americans that they were free under the Emancipation Proclamation. This was two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln had signed the proclamation. Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration of the end of slavery in the United States and has long been celebrated with festivals, parades, and educational events to honor Black history and culture.
