Father's Day is a celebration honoring fathers and celebrating fatherhood, paternal bonds, and the influence of fathers in society. In the United States, it is celebrated annually on the third Sunday in June. The idea for the holiday was first proposed in 1909 by Sonora Smart Dodd, who wanted to honor her own father, a single parent and Civil War veteran who raised six children. After years of local and state-level recognition, it was officially made a permanent national holiday in the U.S. in 1972 by President Richard Nixon.
